Values | Chaos: Discovering Mark Carney and Canada’s Role in a Ruptured World

Mark Carney was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada on March 14, 2025 with credentials that outshone virtually all his predecessors. A few months later, in a riveting speech to world financial leaders at Davos, Switzerland, he urged middle powers to band together to repair the “rupture” in the world order. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential persons in the world. Carney dramatically increased Canada’s military spending, but what has he done to boost the U.N. agenda for peace? Where does he stand on the great issues of war and peace in our turbulent times? What has been the cost of fending off the avaricious U.S. President Donald Trump? Former Senator Douglas Roche, whose previous books include The Human Right to Peace and Global Conscience, traces Carney’s approach to peace and security issues.
