And the Band Played On : Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, 20th
An international bestseller, a nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and made into a critically acclaimed movie, Shilts’ expose revealed why AIDS was allowed to spread unchecked during the early 80’s while the most trusted institutions ignored or denied the threat. One of the few true modern classics, it changed and framed how AIDS was discussed in the following years. Now republished in a special 20th Anniversary edition, And the Band Played On remains one of the essential books of our time.

The goal of much of the administration’s policy is to depoliticize those harms, so as not to face any responsibility for them. There appear to be no built-in limits on what the administration will attempt to achieve this goal: anyone waiting for officials’ consciences to kick in should prepare for a long, hard winter. . 3️⃣the requirement in our society that all social activity be made compatible with the ongoing generation of profit. All 3 were hospitalized and intubated. Index case has died in just 11 days from the onset of cough and a runny nose. ➡️Here where it gets interesting—the other 2 cases, found via vigorous contact tracing—both likely contracted it from the index case in the hospital—one shared a hospital room with the index case, while the other merely visited the same hospital’s ER—but he was NOT in the same hospital ward as the index case! Given second case was in a completely separate ward of the hospital, it makes me think it was likely #airborne transmission. Shouldn’t we all masking in hospitals? @CDCgov’s idiotic HICPAC committee that sets hospital safety standards meantime wants to water them down. Stopping the spread of COVID-19 is critical for all of these reasons… COVID-19 is airborne; aerosols containing the virus behave like smoke — while they dissipate more rapidly in a well-ventilated area, sustained close contact, even outdoors, can lead to transmission. (Think of how you might get a whiff of cigarette smoke while passing a smoker outside.)… Lastly, the CDC and the White House need to stop downplaying the risks that COVID-19 continues to present to all of us. The sooner we join forces to eliminate the virus, the sooner the pandemic will end. Declaring premature victory for the vaccinated and dropping mitigation measures will only prolong the pandemic, and possibly give rise to more severe strains. By Chloe Reichel ‘)
