(As in, a line out the door, but a line that moved along.) Total process about 20 minutes. Good to see people turning out, and good to see Elections Alberta staff managing the tricky process well. The patient poll workers have to fold up and initial ten small pieces of paper for each individual voter. Then you have unfold ten tiny ballots and mark your choice on each one and fold it back up. And then you have to put each individual ballot in its own colour coded ballot box. Since the colours are all spring pastel tones, I felt a bit like the Easter bunny, hiding eggs. My favourite moment? When a bombastic older gentleman came in and called out loudly to the poll worker, “Which ones are the trick questions? I heard on CTV that there were trick questions!” (I did not say, “Sir, they are all trick questions😡.”) Soothing my referendum nerves now by making authentic Alberta borscht, in honour of my immigrant grandmothers. Alberta-grown beets and carrots and celery and garlic and onions and dill and cabbage from Edmonton’s downtown farmers market. How blessed we are by the bounty of this land we love. Oct. 13, 2026 ‘)
